For the new forums, I'd suggest to use the downloadable SMF and not SMFNEW (like this forum) because:
- you can use free hosts which are very fast (loadtime)
- modify themes/add more custom themes
- modify the entire forum
- adding packages which make the forum more 'chique' (eNotify, Member Color Link, Simple Audio Video Embedder) etc.
